Media Communications, Globalisation and Policy (12 points)

Synopsis: An analysis of how global media and those who access them have been construed in the formation of communications policy (with particular reference to Australia, Malaysia and Singapore). After a discussion of themes in media analysis, topics addressed include: globalisation and media ownership; local content and cultural 'protectionism'; and addressing competing demands in establishing policy on access to global media. The unit is taken in conjunction with the Industry Research Project (COM5004) allowing students to relate their project to issues in media globalisation.

Assessment: Presentation (1000 words): 10% + One short essay (2000 words): 20% + One long essay (4000 words): 50% + attendance at two seminars + one seminar presentation (2000 words): 20%
