Media, Communications, Globalisation and Policy (12 points)

Synopsis: A discussion of central issues in communications and media theory with a view to analysing how global media and those who access them have been construed in the formation of national communications policy (with particular reference to Australia, Malaysia and Singapore). After a discussion of themes in media analysis, topics addressed include: community access needs; current and alternative cultural policy; globalisation and media ownership; local content and cultural 'protectionism'; and the place of public interest and competition in establishing cultural policy on access to global media.

Assessment: Presentation (1000 words): 10% + Two short essays (2000 words each): 20% each + One long essay (4000 words): 50%
