COM3423Citizens, Media, Audiences (6 points)(ARTS) Leader: Dr Susan Yell
Offered: Synopsis: This unit addresses the key and related issues of: media audiences and audience activity;the relation between media and citizenship; formal and informal policy formation, implementation and assessment; and the impact of new communication technologies. Most importantly, it makes available to you the possible frameworks for describing and analysing policy, agency and future communications scenarios and considers the strengths and weaknesses of these frameworks. It also helps you learn how these frameworks can be deployed in research design. The unit is organised in two blocks, the first focussing on audience and the second on media policy issues. Assessment: Essay one (2500 words): 50% + Annotated dossier (2000 words): 50% + Students taking this unit at Level 3 will be expected to demonstrate a more sophisticated understanding of research paradigms for the first assignment. They will be expected to demonstrate a more sophisticated level of analysis in the dossier, particularly in respect to Objective 1. Contact Hours: 2 hours per week (2 hour seminar) Prerequisites: COM1010 and COM1020 or equivalents Prohibitions: GSC3402, GSC3423, COM2423 |
