Clayton Second semester 2003 (Day)

Synopsis: This unit provides an introduction to the exciting new field of ecologically oriented literary and cultural studies. Ecocriticism is concerned with the relationship between the texts of human culture and the physical world of nature, including the human body. In this subject we will examine how nature has been constructed in certain key texts of Western religion, philosophy, science and literature, before proceeding to consider a number of theoretical, practical and aesthetic approaches to the post-modern ecological reconstruction of our understanding of ethics, the self, the sacred, and sense of place.
