Introduction to Comparative Literature (6 points)

Synopsis: Continuing the work of CLS1010, this unit provides an introduction to comparative literature, focussing on the interaction between texts and their contexts (historical, geographical, social, linguistic, cultural and personal) in connection with the overarching theme of self, other and other selves. The texts studied are representative of the ancient and modern literature of different linguistic and cultural traditions, including Biblical, classical, European and Asian texts.

Assessment: Essay (1500 words): 30% + Examination (1.5 hours): 25% + Practical work/seminar participation: 45%

Contact Hours: 3 hours (2 x lectures and 1 x tutorial) per week

Prerequisites: CLS1010
