Synopsis: This unit covers the nature and epidemiology of alcohol and drug dependence, and explores the aetiology of dependence in pharmacological as well as behavioural terms. A number of management strategies are explored involving models of behaviour change. Management of withdrawal and brief and long term management strategies are discussed in relation to alcohol, nicotine, benzodiazpine, opiates, stimulants, cannabis and other drugs.
