Clinical and Therapeutic Dietetics 2 (6 points)

Synopsis: This subject focuses on the acute conditions and sub speciality diseases, their medical, surgical and nutritional mangement, and the place of nutrition mangement and support particularly in an acute clinical setting. A program of nutritional assessment of patients, development of their treatment plan, monitoring and outcome reporting will be undertaken over a 2 week practical placement. The specialised topics include the mangement and dietetic treatment of Cystic Fibrosis, Allery, Infectious Disease, Burns and specialised paediatric patients. During this period the student will take on increasingly greater responsibility for workload management, particularly in areas such as nutrition assessment, clinical decision making, monitoring and nutrition education. Students on placement are directly monitored by a clinical practitioner who has been trained in clinical supervision.

Assessment: 3 hour examination (40%), clinical assignment (20%), Objective Structured Clinical Examination (40%)

Prerequisites: Completion of years 1, 2, 3, and semester one year 4 Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics

Corequisites: BND4042 Program Planning

Prohibitions: Only available to BND students
