Social nutrition (6 points)

Synopsis: Historical, cultural, structural and social contexts of food will be examined from a sociological perspective to gain an understanding of motivations behind food choice. Links between food, nutrition and science policy at the macroeconomic level will be analysed to appreciate the ongoing dynamic between sociopolitical forces and sociological research in food and nutrition. Australia's Food and Nutrition system will be compared with that of other countries. Controversial areas such as genetically modified foods, body image, the paleolithic diet, the dietary supplement industry and the interface between the media and the food/nutrition industries will also be covered.

Assessment: Examination: 30% + Analytical paper: 25% + Group assignment: 15% + Reading reaction papers and participation: 20% + Food related exercise: 10%
