Introduction to Australian Indigenous Societies I (6 points)

Synopsis: The unit will commence with an examination of the representation of Australian Indigenous people and society. It will then focus on the meaning of the Dreaming and Aboriginal social organisations, Aboriginal people and Australian 'frontier', Aboriginal experiences of racism, 'protection' and missions and reserves, policies of assimilation and self-determination, land rights and native title. Other topics are contemporary Indigenous health, and the relationship of Aboriginal people and the environment. There will be a brief comparison with the experience of other indigenous peoples.

Assessment: Essay 1 (700 words): 15%; + Essay 2 (1800 words): 40%; + Exam (2000 words): 45%

Contact Hours: 3 hours per week (2-hour lecture, 1-hour tutorial)
