The Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry aims to produce graduates with an in-depth understanding of the principles and techniques behind drug discovery and development. This new degree is a joint initiative of the faculties of Pharmacy and Science at the university and has been devised in response to the increased demand for graduates with expertise in this field. Graduates will have gained skills which will equip them for employment in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly in research and technical support roles, and in other areas such as the polymer and plastics industry, forensics, chemistry and the fine chemical industry. The Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry also gives graduates an excellent basis for postgraduate studies.
The academic course occupies three years of full-time study with an optional fourth/honours year. Four grades of pass will be awarded in the following units of the course (high distinction, distinction, credit, pass).
