Course code: 0023 + Course abbreviation: BEc + The following describes the course structure introduced in 2000 + For details of the old structure, refer to the 2000 university handbook
The Bachelor of Economics degree provides for a compulsory study of economics at first and second-year level, and a compulsory study of econometrics and business statistics at first year. The degree requires students to undertake a three-year specialisation in one of the areas of economics or econometrics and business statistics. A second major sequence of 48 points of study in a single discipline or field of study with at least 12 points at each of second and third-year level (disciplines are defined by department prefixes and fields of study are those sets of related units that may be defined in the handbook) may be taken in (i) the other of these disciplines, (ii) in accounting, finance, business law and taxation, management or marketing from units taught on the Clayton campus, or (iii) in a discipline from another faculty. Such disciplines include languages, mathematics, computing, business systems, the social sciences, sciences and humanities. With the exception of up to 48 credit points which may be taken from disciplines outside the faculty or from an approved list of faculty units offered on campuses other than Clayton, all units are limited to those taught by departments of the faculty on the Clayton campus (ie the third character of the unit code is C).
All first, second and third-year units offered by the faculty of Business and Economics have a value of six points. Full-time students are expected to progress at the rate of eight units or 48 points per year. First-year students may not normally take a second-year unit until at least four first-year units have been successfully completed. It should be noted that units in the later years of the course have prerequisites and corequisites. In addition, students are normally expected to take units in a yearly sequence even if there are no prerequisite units specified.
Students are required to complete the following compulsory units:
Students wishing to take first-year units other than those on the above list are able to undertake the second-year versions of the appropriate number of compulsory units. This allows students to complete substantial work in related fields.
Students must also either (i) complete two additional second-year level and three third-year level units drawn from the department of Economics (Clayton) to complete a major sequence in economics; or (ii) complete a major sequence of studies in Econometrics and Business Statistics (Clayton), which requires students to complete a total of 48 points of study in this discipline with at least 12 points in second year and 18 points in third year. The following are also requirements of the course:
Students must have their program of study approved by the course coordinator or the course coordinator's nominee prior to commencement of the relevant year.
