General information

The Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) degree provides a substantive sequence of units in accounting and/or finance together with coherent sequences of units in the areas of business law and taxation, econometrics and business statistics, economics, management, and marketing. For details of the units available in this specialisation, see `Units in accounting and finance'. All units taken as part of the major specialisation and the units taken as supporting studies are limited to units taught by departments of the Faculty on the Clayton campus (ie the third character of the unit code is C).

Professional accreditation

This degree is recognised by both CPA Australia and The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia as meeting academic requirements for membership. This is also true for senior associate membership of the Australasian Institute of Banking and Finance. For all professional bodies, membership is dependent upon the correct choice of units by students. However, an exceptional feature of this degree is that students can meet the membership requirements of all three bodies simultaneously in a single three-year degree.

Course structure

All first, second and third-year units offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics have a value of six points. Full-time students are expected to progress at the rate of eight units or 48 points per year. First-year students normally may not take a second-year unit until at least four first-year units have been completed successfully. It should be noted that units in the later years of the course have prerequisites and corequisites. In addition, students are expected to take units in a yearly sequence even if there are no prerequisite units specified. In addition to the compulsory specialisation from the Department of Accounting and Finance, specialisations are available in business law and taxation, econometrics and business statistics, economics, marketing, and management.

Students are required to complete the following compulsory units:

• AFC1021/AFC1022 and AFC1030 (Accounting)
• AFC1100/AFC2100 (Finance)
• BTC1110/BTC2110 (Business law)
• ECC1000 (Economics)
• ETC1000 (Business and economic statistics)
• MGC1010 (Management)
• MKC1200/MKC2200 (Marketing)

Students wishing to take first-year units other than those on the above list are able to undertake the second-year versions of the appropriate number of compulsory units. This allows students to complete substantial work in related fields such as languages, computing, or mathematics.

The following are requirements of the course:

• satisfactory completion of 24 units, or units to the value of a total of 144 points, over three full-time years or a maximum of 10 years of study
• a maximum of 10 first-year-level units (60 points)
• a minimum of six third-year-level units (36 points) of which at least four must be from those offered in the faculty at the campus delivering this program
• completion of a 10-unit major in accounting and finance (ie units with a prefix of AFC). This requires students to complete 60 points of study in accounting and finance with at least 12 points at second-year level and 18 points at third-year level
• at least two non-compulsory units (12 points) outside the main field of study
• an option to include units to a maximum value of 36 points from disciplines outside the faculty or from an approved list of faculty units offered on campuses other than Clayton.

Students must have their program of study approved by the course coordinator or the course coordinator's nominee prior to commencement of the relevant year.
