Diploma in Arts (Australian Indigenous Studies)


General information

Course code: 3055 + Clayton and Gippsland (on campus only) + This diploma is part of the Monash Indigenous Access Scheme and is available only to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students

Objectives

This is a two-year full-time course which provides the opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to enter university study with a supplementary program and support. Successful completion of the course provides direct entry to the second year of the Bachelor of Arts or Arts/Law degree in certain circumstances or the exit award of the Diploma in Arts (Australian Indigenous Studies). The course provides knowledge and skills to enhance employment prospects and to develop a greater awareness of lifestyle alternatives.

Entry requirements

Admission is by direct access administered by the Centre of Australian Indigenous Studies (CAIS) with the minimum requirement being satisfactory completion of Year 11 with a pass in English, or Year 12 or equivalent (eg TAFE study). Mature-age persons are welcome to apply. In assessing applications, recognition of prior learning (RPL) will be a factor. This means that previous work experience such as professional and community responsibilities will be taken into consideration.

Cost to students

There are no fees or HECS liability for this course. It is Abstudy approved, and extra tutorial assistance is available at no charge through ATAS (Aboriginal Tutorial Assistance Scheme).

Course structure

To qualify for the Diploma in Arts (Australian Indigenous Studies), a candidate shall complete a total of 48 points of study over the two-year course.

This 48 points comprises a tertiary study preparatory program plus the prescribed units set out in the course brochure (available from the Centre for Australian Indigenous Studies), including GSC1611, AIS1040, AIS1010, AIS1020, ANY1010, ANY1020 and/or either COM1010 and/or COM1020 and/or HSY1040 and/or CJC1002.
Students who pass the first year but do not progress into the second year may take out a CAIS Certificate of Completion. Students completing semester one of year 2 but not semester two may be awarded the Arts faculty certificate, providing a minimum of 24 points has been gained. Those who successfully complete the two-year course will be awarded the Diploma in Arts (Australian Indigenous Studies), OR they may apply to enter the second year of the Bachelor of Arts degree with advanced standing of 48 points at first-year level.
