General information

This course is currently undergoing a major amendment and is proposed to be offered from semester one, 2003.

This course is jointly offered by Monash University's Department of Psychological Medicine and the University of Melbourne's Department of Psychiatry (Master of Psychiatry). The degree is taken by coursework over three years, part-time.

Applicants must be registered medical practitioners currently engaged in psychiatric practice, clinical training in psychiatry or with an interest in psychiatry. The principal aim of this degree is to provide the medical practitioner with training in the academic aspects of psychiatry.

Year 1

• MPM1001 Foundations of psychiatry
• MPM1006 Neuroscience of psychiatry
• MPM1009 Personality and human behaviour

Year 2

• MPM1003 Child and adolescent psychiatry (subject to university approval)
• MPM1202 General adult psychiatry I (subject to university approval)

Year 3

• MPM1301 General adult psychiatry II (subject to university approval)
• MPM1005 Psychiatry in physical health and illness (subject to university approval)
• Ten electives will also be offered during years 2 and 3, two per year (all subject to university approval):

• MPMS202 Advanced skills in primary care and communtiy psychiatry
• MPMS203 Drug and alcohol use disorders
• MPMS204 Ethics, history and philosophy of psychiatry

• MPMS206 Intellectual and developmental disabilities
• MPMS207 Psychopharmacology
• MPMS208 Skills in critical apprasial of research; population surveys to qualitative methodologies
• MPMS209 Transcultural mental health (including indigenous)
• MPMS210 Forensic psychiatry

Assessment

Continuous assessment will be based on submission of assignments and critical essays related to the core and elective units being undertaken for the degree. This may be supplemented by written and oral examinations.
