On completion of the course, students are expected to demonstrate advanced assessment skills and knowledge related to the care of clients with high acuity conditions in a ward environment; understand pathophysiological processes for common conditions presenting in acute care and specific diseases/conditions encountered in high-dependency units; utilise appropriate clinical reasoning problem-solving frameworks for complex care situations; competently practice advanced technical and supportive care interventions for clients with high-acuity conditions; develop an awareness of professional issues associated with high- dependency nursing; undertake nursing practice in a manner that is sensitive to clients' personal, social and cultural needs.
Applicants would normally have a degree in nursing or a related discipline; registration with the Nurses Board of Victoria (Division 1 or be eligible for registration); and at least one year of nursing experience.
The course consists of five units, which will normally be completed over a period of one year. This course is offered using a combination of on- campus and flexible modes. Successful completion of the course requires the study of the following five core units.
Assessment includes case-study reports, tests, online tutorial discussion groups, clinical portfolios, exams, OSCA, oral presentations, clinical assessment and advanced life support assessment.
