Postgraduate Certificate of Education (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages - International) [TESOL - International]


General information

The Postgraduate Certificate of Education (TESOL - International) is designed for local and international students who wish to gain a qualification to teach English to speakers of other languages in overseas locations.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course, applicants must hold either an approved three-year bachelors degree and an approved fourth year of study, or an approved four-year bachelors degree, or have qualifications or experience considered by the faculty board to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above awards. Applicants must also demonstrate their English proficiency.

English proficiency requirements

Education in full English medium in an English-speaking country or one of the following:

Program 1

Program 2

IELTS - 6.0 global (no score below 5)
TOEFL - 550 with TWE of 4
Computer-based TOEFL - 213

IELTS - 6.5 global (speaking and writing no lower than 6)
TOEFL - 577 with TWE of 4.5
Computer-based TOEFL - 237

Course outline

For the award of Postgraduate Certificate of Education (TESOL - International), a candidate will successfully complete two 12-point units from the following list:

Program 1 - entry with an IELTS of 6 or its equivalent

Program 2 - entry with an IELTS of 6.5 or its equivalent

EDF6233 Theory and practice of TESOL (12 pts)

EDF6233 Theory and practice of TESOL (12 pts)

EDF6232 Advanced English for professional practice in teaching English as a foreign language (12 pts)

EDF6236 Language, society and cultural difference (12 pts), or
an approved general elective (12 pts), or
EDF6010/20 Professional project (12 pts)

Length of course/workload required

The Postgraduate Certificate of Education (TESOL - International) requires a minimum of at least one semester of full-time study and no more than two years of part-time study. Each of the units is one semester in length. The expected number of hours per week for a part-time student is 24.
