Master of Visual Culture (one-year program)


Course code: 3094 + Mid-year entry available + Clayton campus + Coordinators: Leigh Astbury and Anne Marsh

Synopsis

This degree, which is entirely by coursework, is designed to offer advanced studies in visual culture, allowing students to specialise in galleries and the cultural industry, film and screen studies, Australian art, theories of visual cultures, and architectural studies. Students normally develop a research initiative, undertaking a research essay to the value of 12 points. The opportunity of work experience is provided through the Internship in visual culture which is available across a broad range of cultural institutions.

Entry requirements

There are four paths into the program. Candidates must have completed one of the following:
(a) A BA (Hons) degree in visual arts/culture or a related discipline with an overall grade of second class honours division B or higher.
(b) A masters qualifying by coursework in visual arts/culture or a related discipline with an overall grading at credit level or higher.
(c) A Postgraduate Diploma of Arts in visual arts with an overall grading at credit level or higher, and a statement listing relevant publications, if any, senior level community service in a visual arts area and other relevant qualifications.
(d) A bachelors degree in a relevant discipline with credit grades or higher in the third part of the major or in the last year of the degree, plus a minimum of three years of experience at a senior level directly relevant to the visual arts, to visual culture, or to an area of media production. Evidence for this must accompany a candidate's application for entry. In addition, candidates must supply (a) two references, commenting on the nature and extent of the experience; (b) a full CV; and (c) a statement of up to 1000 words on the applicant's career objectives and reasons for applying for entry.

Course structure

Students complete 48 points comprised of four units chosen from the list below (VAM5000 is compulsory for students without an honours degree or demonstrable research experience at a postgraduate level):
