Master of Translation Studies (1.5-year program)


General information

Course code: 3081 + Administered at Clayton, with core units offered at Caulfield + Mid-year entry available + Course coordinators: Alison Tokita and Heinz Kreutz

Synopsis

The course seeks to build up students' skills in translation to and from English and another language, with both practical and theoretical approaches. The main languages available are Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish, and other languages depending on student numbers. Students will be given a foundation in theories of translation and will also receive training in research on translation studies. Through various elective units, the course offers expertise in practical aspects of being a professional translator, such as information technology and running a small business.

Entry requirements

The minimum requirement for entry is a bachelors degree with a major in a language which is not the student's native language. The level should be at least equivalent of three years post-VCE study. Where English is the foreign language, the student is required to have a TOEFL score of 600 or IELTS of 7, and a score of at least 5 in TWE. Professional experience in translation may be a substitute for a bachelors degree. Professional experience may be used to apply for advanced standing (credit).

Exit points

Students who have completed 24 points of the Master of Translation Studies may apply to exit with a Graduate Certificate of Arts. Students who have completed 48 points of the Master of Translations Studies may apply to exit with a Graduate Diploma in Translation Studies.

Students complete 72 points consisting of three core units and 12 points of electives at level 4, and 24 points at level 5 chosen from the list below:
