Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine


General Information

Course code: 1759 + Department of General Practice, East Bentleigh + Full-fee-paying course: $10,400 (Australian residents); $12,700 (international students) + Attendance is compulsory for some units

Aims

This course aims to foster the critical appraisal skills of general practitioners in reference to the nature of the discipline, its daily practice and its literature and research base. It also aims to provide a course of study for general practitioners wishing to expand their knowledge and skills relevant to clinical general practice, to meet their own personal and professional needs as well as the needs of the patients and the community in which they practise. Upon completion of the graduate diploma, articulation into the masters degree may be possible. The course is particularly suitable for doctors in rural practice in Australia.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be registered medical practitioners with a minimum of two years of postgraduate experience and preferably in active general practice. Applicants for individual units and not-for-award will be considered from a variety of backgrounds including overseas trained doctors. Special consideration will be given to suitably qualified overseas graduates residing in their own country.

Course structure

The course will consist of two ëmajorí compulsory units and three ëminorí elective units, conducted part-time over a two-year period. Regular course instruction will be equivalent to two half-day sessions per week, including student assignments. The major units will each be conducted over a 14-week semester. The elective units will each be conducted over a 10-week semester. The units are detailed below. To qualify for the graduate diploma, candidates must obtain a total of 48 credit points.

Candidates who have other equivalent qualifications may apply for exemption for certain units in the graduate diploma or masters course. Each case will be considered on its merits.
