General Information

Course code: 0752 + School of Nursing, Peninsula campus + Full-fee-paying course: $4200 (Australian residents); $4350 (international students)

Aims

This course aims to facilitate the acquisition of theoretical knowledge, skills and attitudes inherent in palliative care practice and prepare division 1 nurses for entry into the specialist field of palliative care. On completion of this course, the student should be able to:

• discuss the philosophy of hospice and palliative care
• examine the decision making process in assessing, planning and evaluating problems related to clients, caregivers and the community; related to palliative care
• develop an understanding of the relationship of cultural and spiritual beliefs, grief and bereavement
• explore a range of belief systems and methods of assisting clients to maintain their preferred lifestyles
• demonstrate a range of skills related to caring, counselling and pastoral care, and
• determine the availability of resources and structure of different palliative care services.

Entry requirements

Applicants would normally have relevant registration with the Nurses Board of Victoria (Division 1) with at least one year of nursing experience and have a degree in nursing or a related discipline.

Special requirements

Access to a PC and the internet.

Attendance

A compulsory 32 hours of negotiated fieldwork during the semester is required. Areas may include:

• specialist palliative care in the community or hospice unit, and
• consultancy specialist terms in acute hospitals.

Course structure

This course is to be completed over one year part-time.

Major studies

First semester

• NSG6301 Introductory perspectives on palliative care and the hospice concept
• NSG5214 Developing a therapeutic alliance

Second semester

• NSG6302 Principles and practice in hospice and palliative care
• Elective (students may choose any unit of interest listed in postgraduate unit offerings)

Assessment

Assessment consists of a combination of assignments, computer conferencing and fieldwork.

Advanced standing for previous study

Nurses who have undertaken related study at a postgraduate level may be eligible for advanced standing.
