Graduate Certificate of Nursing (Gerontics)


General Information

Course code: 2922 + School of Nursing (Gippsland and Peninsula campuses) + Full-fee-paying course: $4200 (Australian residents); $4350 (international students) + Course coordinators: Ailsa Rickards/Joan Yalden

Aims

This course has been specifically designed to assist registered nurses in the practice of caring for older clients across a broad variety of clinical settings. The course also assists registered nurses who wish to research and further understand the phenomenon of the ageing process and health potential and deficits commonly associated with ageing.

Entry requirements

Applicants would normally have relevant registration (eg Division 1 with the Nurses Board of Victoria), with at least one year of nursing experience, and have a degree in nursing or a related discipline. Experience in the relevant area of practice is desirable.

Course structure

The course consists of four units, which will normally be completed over a period of one year. The course is offered by off-campus learning or by flexible mode (ie a combination of on-campus and off-campus learning teaching methods). Successful completion of the course requires the study of the following three core units and one elective unit:

Please note that to satisfy the requirements of unit assignments, it is expected that students will network with practitioners and agencies in the field of gerontic nursing. Students need to develop an understanding of all areas of aged care, and should negotiate with other facilities and agencies to spend at least one day in a variety of settings, eg nursing homes and hostels, ACAT team, community option/linkages packages, and domiciliary care teams.
