Postgraduate Diploma in Transport and Traffic


General Information

Course code: 2863 + Clayton campus + Full-fee-paying course, with no HECS liability attached + Cost: Australian students - TBA ($1250 per six-credit-point unit in 2002); international students - $1500 per six-credit-point unit

Aims

This course aims to provide a program of study for transport and traffic professionals wishing to expand their skills in areas of relevance to the planning, design, management and operation of transport and traffic facilities to meet their own personal and professional needs as well as the needs of their clients and the wider community. Graduates are able to bring together knowledge from the many disciplines involved in transport and to communicate effectively with other people in the industry and wider community.

Professional recognition

The course satisfies the continuing education requirements of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.

Entry requirements

Participants will have an honours degree in civil engineering or equivalent or a bachelors degree and two years of high-level technical experience. Alternatively, students can articulate from the Graduate Certificate if they have at least a 65 per cent average.

Course duration

The course is normally completed in two years by off-campus learning (based on two units per semester) with a maximum of four years part-time (based on one unit per semester).

Course structure

The course will be conducted by off-campus learning part-time over four semesters or two years. It may be accelerated to a 12-month full-time course. The course is therefore equivalent to one EFTSU or 48 credit points.
Students are allowed a maximum period of four years to complete the course with a maximum intermission period of 12 months. Where appropriate, students will be encouraged to enrol in the Graduate Certificate of Transport and Traffic in the first instance and then articulate to the Postgraduate Diploma of Transport and Traffic.

Advanced standing for previous study

Subject to individual assessment, credit may be granted for up to 50 per cent of the total course, on the basis of work of equivalent standard successfully completed at another institution and up to 25 per cent for work completed outside the Engineering faculty at Monash University, but which has not formed part of the work presented for any other degree.

Resource requirements

Off-campus learning material in the form of study guides and CD-ROMs are currently being developed and will be made available to all students. Prescribed textbooks will be available from the university bookshop. Students will require access to a computer with email and internet access, either at home or via commercial access points or facilities at local libraries etc.
