WMN2150Rethinking Global Culture: Gender and Consumption(ART)
Jane Maree Maher 6 points + 2 hours per week + Second semester + Caulfield + Prohibited combinations: WMN3150 Synopsis: This unit examines questions of consumption and globalisation from a gendered perspective. It considers how the expansion of media and communication technologies has impacted on Western views of so-called developing nations and cultures. Cross-Cultural exchanges and borrowings are explored in relation to feminist debates in the areas postcolonialism, consumption, sexuality, race and identity. Areas for examination include advertising, media, travel and tourism, foreign aid and child sponsorship programs, 'world literature', and transnational labour movements. Assessment: Bibliographic/research skills exercise (1000 - 1500 words): 20% + Research task (2500 - 3000 words): 60% + Class Test (1 hour, equiv 500 words): 10% + Seminar participation: 10% |
