Sex, Gender and Knowledge: Introduction to Women's Studies

6 points + Second semester + Clayton + 3 hours contact and 9 hours private study

Synopsis: Does gender matter? What happens when women and the ideas and issues that affect them take centre stage? How do questions of sex and gender shape debates about history, identity and politics? How has feminism challenged our ideas of 'knowledge' and 'learning'? What is Women's Studies? This unit introduces students to this interdisciplinary field. It covers changes in the status of women and introduces students to a range of critical and analytic approaches to contemporary debates on education, work, popular culture and gender politics.

Assessment: Short exercise (1000 words): 20% + Research essay (2000 words): 50% + Class test (one hour, equivalent to 1000 words): 20% + Class participation and written class exercise (equivalent to 500 words): 10%
