TRN5060Translation 3: Translation as cultural competence(ART)
Jeffrey Browitt 6 points + 2 hours per week + Second Semester + Caulfield Synopsis: This unit follows on from the Semester 2 unit, TRN4050. It incorporates cultural issues which must be taken into consideration when translating and thus complements and builds upon the combined language/culture focus of most undergraduate courses in the current language Schools. The unit's primary focus is the issue of cultural competence (pragmatic and semiotic differences between cultures) and the related issue of equivalence. Ideal translator competence also implies a sensitivity to and knowledge of cultural issues which impinge upon translation practice, including mode of discourse, tenor, and cultural-specific codes. The unit will involve classroom and web-based exercises. Assessment: Weekly assignments (equivalent 2,000 words): 40% + Critical essay (1000 words): 20% + Mid-semester test (0.5 hours): 15% + Final exam (1 hour): 25% |
