TRN4010Technology and Translation(ART)
Jim Breen 6 points + 3 hours per week + Second Semester + Caulfield + Prerequisites: TRN4030 + Prohibition: TRN5010 Synopsis: Unit introduces students to the issues and techniques associated with creating, manipulating, displaying and printing texts in a variety of languages, including scripts that are alphabetic, syllabic and ideographic. Students will be introduced to the current standards and techniques for multilingual texts and taught to evaluate the various electronic aids to translation, such as electronic dictionaries and translation memory systems. There will be an overview of machine translation and its limitations and training in the use of online corpora and guidance in WWW searching in translation and ways of "adding value" to a translated text, such as the use of computer graphics. Assessment: A portfolio of five text-handling/ translation tasks. Each task (approximately 500 words or equivalent) will also be accompanied by a short critical report (400 words) in which the student will document the use mad eof technology in the task and critically assess the efficacy and usefulness of the technology in the task. |
