TAD2128Art and Tapestry: Decoration and Meaning(A&D)
6 points + 104 hours of lectures, study and site visits in Europe and 52 hours of independent study + Summer semester from November + Caulfield, Europe + Prerequisites: A&D students: TAD1101 & TAD1102, others completion of 1st year bachelors degree. Synopsis: A study of the development of contemporary tapestry from its medieval European origins through the revivals of William Morris in the UK and Jean Lurcat in France with particular emphasis on tapestry as a mural art. Examples from the Coptic era will trace developments through to the Medieval period. The relationship between the sources of imagery in illuminated manuscripts will be investigated. The unit includes fieldwork to view particularly significant collections and the centres of tapestry production which form the basis of the study. Assessment: Two essays 1200 words each (50%) research book 2400 words (50%). |
