European cultural history: the Spanish Civil War

6 points + 2 hours per week + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisite: A First-year sequence in any European Language or European Studies.

Synopsis: This unit will investigate the literature produced in several European countries (ie; Spain, France, England, Germany, Russia) as a result of/response to Spanish Civil War of 1936-39. The internal conflicts and ideological positions leading to the civil war will be also investigated, as well as the impact of the war on the intellectual life and artistic production of the 1930s of the Spanish community inside Spain and around the world.

Assessment: Two take-home exams (1000 words each, in English): 40% + final essay (2500 words in english): 60%
