SLA3910The novel in Eastern Europe(ART)
M Pavlyshyn 6 points + 3 hours per week + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: Any second-year language or literature unit + Prohibition: SLA2190 Synopsis: A selection of novels from Russian, Czech, Polish, and Ukrainian literature will be studied to disclose shared literary features and the special social, political and cultural role of the novel in Eastern Europe. There will be an introduction to the theory of the novel as a genre, with special emphasis on the work of M Bakhtin. Texts will be studied in English. Assessment: Essay (2000 words): 40% + Class paper (to be written up in 1000 words): 20% + Examination (1.5 hours): 40% + Third-year students will be expected to demonstrate more advanced analytic skills than second-year students |
