Synopsis: This unit aims to introduce students to some of the key theoretical perspectives in sociology. We begin with a critical account of the early divergent traditions of Marx, Weber, Durkheim and Parsons. We then move on to a critical analysis of the more contemporary perspectives of Foucault, Bourdieu, globalisation, poststructuralism, feminism and sexualities.

Assessment: Essay (2000 words): 50% + Class test (equivalent 1500 words): 30% + Short assignment (1000 words): 20%
