PLT2150Nationalism 1: Global Transformations(ART)
Paul James 6 points + 2 hours per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: A first-year sequence in Politics, Anthropology, or Sociology + Prohibitions COS2553/3550 Synopsis: How is it that despite the impact of globalism upon the nation-state, we have seen the revival of nationalism as a central form of political-cultural identity? 'Nationalism' is a broad-ranging and introductory subject that attempts to understand nationalism as it has changed over the course of the last century. It introduces students to some key approaches to understanding the new nationalisms, and it illustrates the contradictory nature of the present situation through extensive discussions of Europe, North America, Asia, Africa and Australia. This subject is linked to the concurrent subject 'Nationalism: 2. Interpretations' Assessment: Essay (2500 words): 60% + Examination (2 hours): 40% |
