6 points + Second semester + Clayton + 3 hours of lectures per week, 2 hours of practical sessions, problem classes or demonstrations per week, and 1 hour of tutorials/simulation exercises per week) + Prerequisite: 6 points of level 1 Physics; enrolment in, or have attempted the second level of the BSc or BBioMedSc degree

Synopsis: This subject provides students with a practical understanding of the properties and applications of a range of biomedical materials, the basic physics underpinning the production and use of radio-isotopes in nuclear medicine and high energy x-rays and electron beams in radiotherapy, along with the physical principles underpinning the medical diagnostic imaging modalities of MRI and ultrasound. Student will also extend their knowledge to include relevant topics in radiation safety and digital image processing.

Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 60% + Tutorial activities: 15% + Laboratory exercises including 3 laboratory reports: 25%
