Photography, identity and sexuality 3

6 points + 4 hours of lectures, tutorials and/or workshops and 8 independent study hours per week + First semester + Caulfield + Prerequisites: 6cps Level 2 Photomedia units or equivalent + Prohibitions: PHO2205

Synopsis: This unit will explore sexual identity, performativity and gender, the body and self-fashioning in photography and the photographic process, and how they have been used to generate and critique notions of identity and sexuality in recent visual culture. Within the context of visual art practice students will develop an understanding of the creative and conceptual possibilities generated by such movements as queer theory, feminism and gay activism. Students will be introduced to a range of contemporary and historical photographic images concerned with gender, sexuality and sexual identity in order to build a conceptual framework for their arts practice.

Assessment: By folio, including set projects, journal and negotiated projects 100%, including a mid-semester assessment worth at least 20% of the final mark
