Synopsis: Topics covered in this unit include: role of police in liberal democratic societies; police government relations in theory and practice; relationship between police ministers and police commissioners; relationship between police unions and government; government initiated inquiries into policing; politicisation of crime and policing; and police and the media.

Assessment: Essay (2000 words): 40% + Tutorial presentation 10% + Examination (2 hour): 50%
