MIC3041Medical microbiology and biotechnology(SCI)
Professor Ben Adler 6 points + Three 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour laboratory class or tutorial/ discussion session per week + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: MIC2022 or BMS2052 + Prohibitions: ASC3657, ASC2687 or MIC3042 Synopsis: In this unit, aspects of microbiology are presented which are relevant to infectious diseases and to biotechnology. It builds on the content of previous subjects providing a basis of the study of medical microbiology, especially the nature of microbial infections of different body systems, immunity and mechanisms of host resistance, vaccines and the mode of action of antibiotics and how microbes become resistant to them. The subject introduces the student to the use of microbes in biotechnology. Assessment: Written theory examination (2-hours) 50% + Theory of practical examination (1-hour) 25% + Laboratory reports and practical class assessment 25% |
