Associate Professor Chris Browne and Dr Euan Wallace 24 points + Five 1 hour lectures + 8 hours of small group teaching + 2 hours of case based teaching + 3 hours community service + Equivalent hours for self-directed learning + Second semester + Clayton Synopsis: THEME 1: 'Community Service' volunteer work in community agencies develops an awareness of the sector's relevance to the practice of medicine and the socio-economic context of health and illness. THEME 2: 'Information Management and Health Promotion' develops skills in data management, critical appraisal of evidence and knowledge in order to assist in clinical decision-making. The principles of health promotion and the underlying theoretical approaches will be utilized for the development and presentation of a Health Promotion poster. THEME 3: 'Hormones, sex growth and nutrition' examines three main areas: 'Introduction to endocrinology', 'Sex, reproduction and development' and 'Gastroenterology, nutrition and metabolism'. Student project cases (SPC) will be used as a focus to research and present information on medical conditions relevant to the areas covered in the semester. THEME 4: 'Clinical Skills' develops clinical reasoning and focused history taking based on the areas covered in Theme 3. Case Study: Weekly case studies are used to integrate material presented in all themes. Rural/urban Placement: a fortnight focusing on either the experience of practicing medicine in the urban or rural environments will be undertaken as in Semester 1. Assessment: Within-semester assessment tasks 20% + End-of-semester written and OSCE-style examinations 60% + VIA (Vertical Integration Assessment) task 20% |
