LIN2390Language, communication and the sexes(ART)
To be advised 6 points + 2 hours per week + Second semester + Clayton, OCDL and flexible + Prerequisites: Any first-year sequence in Linguistics, English in Use, Communication, Text and Context + Prohibition: LIN3390 Synopsis: This unit examines the relationship between sex/gender/sexuality, language use, linguistic representation and communicative behaviour. The examination of differences in the language use and communication patterns of the sexes focuses on (i) a variety of languages including Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and Swedish; (ii) written and spoken texts and (iii) public and private contexts including patient/doctor interaction, computer mediated interaction, interpersonal communication and educational settings. Assessment: Research project (2000 words): 40% + Mid-semester test (1.5 hour): 20% + Class fieldwork report (1000 words): 30% + Participation [on-line distance education students - discussion groups or contribution to ongoing debate through written memos]: 10% |
