6 points + 4 hours per week + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: Competence equivalent to Level B Japanese or permission + Prohibitions: JPL2310 and JPL3310

Synopsis: This is the first part of an intermediate sequence which covers both spoken language and contemporary written language. Language acquisition through active interaction in and out of the classroom is encouraged. The course content is integrated around a major project which involves interviewing a Japanese native speaker and writing a report.

Assessment: Mid-semester test (50 minutes): 15% + Final examination (2 hours): 35% + Listening comprehension test: 15% + Speaking test: 10% + Quizzes: 10% + One major assignment (taped interview and report): 15%
