(ART)

Barbara Caine

6 points + Second semester + Clayton + 2.5 hours per week + Prerequisite: A first year history sequence, or permission + Prohibition: HSY3910

Synopsis: The carnage of the battlefields of the First World War horrified the generation who lived through it. The events of 1914-18 continue to fascinate writers, artists and historians. This unit will focus on both experience and representations of the war, looking both at the letters, diaries, poetry and paintings produced during the war and those produced in the decades after. It will encompass both battle front and the home front, and will stress the changing nature of warfare, on the one hand, and the political developments, changing economic organisation and social stresses that war brought to the participant countries, including Australia, on the other.
