HSY2570Modern Israel: Vision and Reality(ART)
Chanan Reich 6 points + one lecture over 6 weeks and one 2-hour seminar per week over 11 weeks + Clayton + second semester + Prohibition: HSY3570 Synopsis: The course examines social and cultural issues in the history of modern Israel. After introducing Zionist ideologies and the history of the Yishuv, it explores struggles for equality, with particular reference to socialist ideals; the kibbutz movement, and the position of women; the integration of immigrants and the Sephardi experience; changing identities; religious fundamentalism; ethnicity, race and gender, as well as the role of the Holocaust in Israel's identity. The course will also focus on non-Jewish minorities, especially Palestinians. Assessment: Participation: 5% + oral presentation (equivalent to 1000 words: 20% + essay (2500 words): 40% + One hour-exam: 35% |
