Zones of transformation: Development and environment in the Pacific-Indian Ocean Region

Synopsis: Environmental and socio-cultural implications of economic and political transformations in the regions surrounding Australia. Explores interlinkages between agriculture, urbanisation, gender dimensions of industrialisation, and varied outcomes of transnational finance and investment in countries of the region. Issues include: economic strategies and development from colonial times to the present, ecological dimensions of development strategies, extended metropolitan growth and mega-city formation, nationalism and democracy.

Assessment: Written (6000 words): 65% + Examinations (2 hours): 30% + Tutorial: 5%
