Synopsis: This unit presents a series of arguments about the cultural variety of the constructions, social performances and positioning of gendered identities in contemporary multicultural Australia. The emphasis throughout is on developing frameworks for understanding 'lived experience' and on paying attention to the relationship between gender and power. Beginning with a consideration of 'valid knowledges', the subject offers an historical overview of the project of women's studies, before turning to the explanation and development of the approaches to the relations between women and men proposed in the interdisciplinary 'borderwork' of gender studies.

Assessment: Journal - Part A (1100 words): 25% + Journal - Part B (1400 words): 30% + Major essay (2000 words): 45%
