German Studies, advanced I, part 2

6 points + 4 hours per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: GRN2315 + Prohibitions: GRN2225, GRN2228, GRN2425, GRN2525, GRN2625

Synopsis: Component 1: Continuation of first semester; further development of speaking and writing skills in German. Component 2: An examination of German culture from the early nineteenth century to the late nineteenth century in a socio-historical context through the study of selected texts. This component will familiarize students with the key elements and main stages of the cultural history of the German-speaking region in this period, as well as with the conventions of cultural periodisation in German (eg Romantik, Biedermeier, Junges Deutschland, Realismus), presenting the work of a number of important German-speaking writers in the process.

Assessment: Essay (1000 words): 20% + Classpaper: 15% + Test (45 min.): 15% + Exam (1 hour): 20% + 4 homework exercises 20% + Oral assessment: 10%
