6 points + Two 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour practical per week + 12 weeks lecture/practical coursework + First semester + Clayton + Prohibitions: GPS3011, GPS3022

Synopsis: This unit will consist of three components: Reflection seismology and well logging techniques applied to the identification of depositional systems, petroleum reservoirs and traps; Petroleum geology, including basin systems, source rocks, formation and migration of petroleum, petroleum reservoirs and fluids; structural controls on petroleum accumulation; and Micropalaeontology involving biostratigraphy in relation to sedimentary systems.

Assessment: Practical work: 30% + Assignment work: 20% + Examination (3 hours): 50%
