GPS3232Geophysics: EM and Electrical(SCI)
Professor Jim Cull 6 points + Two 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour practical per week + 12 weeks lecture/practical coursework + Second semester + Clayton + Prohibitions: GPS3011, GPS3022 Synopsis: This subject aims to give a broad introduction to electrical methods for students interested in the practical application of physics and mathematics for geophysical surveys (including geotechnical studies, groundwater and mineral exploration). Students will gain an understanding of both galvanic and inductive methods for mapping the electrical characteristics. Introductory topics will include basic resistivity, self potential, and induced polarisation techniques. These topics will provide a foundation for electromagnetic methods including time domain techniques (TEM) and ground penetrating radar (GPR). Assessment: Practical work/assignments: 30% + Examination (3 hours): 70% |
