(MED)

Not offered in 2002

Ms J Grubb

12 points + 24 hours per week + First semester + Gippsland (OCDL)

Synopsis: Examines in-depth the belief that nursing's main function is that of caring. This concept is explored from a viewpoint, which examines theories of caring developed by Watson, Newman, Leininger, Benner and others. Caring is viewed as being linked with religion, language, politics, economics, cultural values and importantly, philosophy. Philosophical views are drawn from the existentialists. In particular Heidegger and the phenomenologists will be examined for the relevance of their ideas to a caring paradigm. Patient's descriptions of illness and their views of nurses as carers will also be examined.

Assessment: Two assignments: 100%
