GES2660Power and Poverty: geographies of the third world(ART)
Dr Priya Rangan 6 points + 3 hours per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: A first-year sequence in geography, or permission Synopsis: This unit focuses on the interrelated nature of power, poverty and development in the contemporary world. Students are introduced to the concepts, definitions and discourses of international development. Focus on issues of famine, hunger, land reform, labour regimes and colonisation. Examines links between population, resources and health issues. The role of government and non-governmental agencies in alternative development strategies. Assessment: Written (1750 words): 45% + Tutorial participation: 10% + Book Review (750 words: 10% + Examination (2 hours): 35% |
