Ethics and biotechnology

6 points + 12 weeks + 12 hours per week + OCDL + Year 1, First semester

Synopsis: This unit will examine a range of key ethical issues that arise in new reproductive research and biomedical technology such as the human genome project and human cloning. This is followed by consideration of certain ethical issues raised by prenatal diagnosis, genetic counselling and occupational health. The ethics of genetically modifying animals and plants for human benefit, through xenotransplantation and animal cloning will also be considered along with arguments about the social responsibilities of scientists carrying out research in reproductive and biomedical technology.

Assessment: Written assignments:40% + Preparation and submission of a Journal:20% + Written theory exam:40%
