French Studies 3/IVA

6 points + 4 hours per week + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: FRN1320, FRN2320 or equivalent + Prohibitions: FRN1410, FRN2410

Synopsis: Class activities are designed to enable students to acquire advanced communication skills in spoken and written French. Oral work focuses on group discussion and role play. Written tasks involve expository essay writing, and English to French translation. Dictionary usage and close attention to vocabulary figure prominently in all written work. Revision and extension of competence in syntax is undertaken in conjunction with the communication skills practiced. The Cultural component of the subject will study representations of Paris in Literature and painting and with reference to social history.

Assessment: 1. Language: 70% = (Written x2: 20%, Translation assignments x2: 10%, homework x5: 5%, oral presentation/role play: 15%, final exam: 20%) + 2. Culture: 30% = (class/take home exercises: 10%, essay: 20%).
