Igneous petrology and geochemistry

6 points + Two 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour practical class per week, and one 2-day field excursion + Second Semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: ESC2011, ESC2022 or permission + Prohibition: ESC3111

Synopsis: This subject consists of two units that will be presented consecutively; both are compulsory. Magmatism: will include material concerning the nature of the Earth's interior, its melting to form magmas and the emplacement of these magmas to form a range of igneous rock types. Geochemistry of igneous rocks: will emphasise the principles of major element, trace element and fundamental radiogenic isotope geochemistry; and apply them to the geochemistry of the Earth's mantle and crust within the various global tectonic environments and of silicate magmas generated by partial melting within them.

Assessment: Practical work: 30% + Fieldwork: 10% + Examination (3 hours): 60%
